Each of these five houses serves a different client, so the best choice depends on what you need the garment to do. Here is what each does best, where to find it, and what to ask at your first appointment.
Best for: heritage half/full canvas suits, wedding tailoring and clients who want to re-order from abroad.
Area: 28-28/1 Sukhumvit Soi 19, near Asok BTS and Sukhumvit MRT.The house: AMBFA has dressed clients from its Sukhumvit address since the 1960s and is now in its fourth generation of family stewardship. Over those years the house has cut for diplomats, executives and grooms from across the world, and many return for decades.
What sets it apart: each commission begins with a private consultation and a pattern drafted by hand. Jackets are built on half/full canvas and finished by hand, and clients choose from more than 6,000 cloths, including Italian wools from mills such as Reda. AMBFA's signature House Cut, a one-button shawl lapel tuxedo with a low gorge and silk satin facings, has become a quiet favourite for weddings. The team also travels to London, Paris, Geneva, Dubai, Singapore, Hong Kong and Washington D.C. for worldwide trunk shows, so your pattern can be refined without a flight to Bangkok.

Best for: classic business suits in European cloth.
Area: Silom Road, near Sala Daeng BTS and Silom MRT.The house: Perry has made suits for men and women since 1974, working from second-floor premises on Silom Road. It is one of the longest-running names in the Silom business district.
What sets it apart: a mostly European cloth selection, including Dormeuil, Ermenegildo Zegna and Loro Piana, and a conservative, well-balanced cut. CNN Travel reported two-piece suits from about 18,000 baht with a turnaround of around one week.

Area: by appointment only. The house: Chano Thai Tailor, also known as Heart to Heart Tailoring, works from a private studio rather than a walk-in shop. Most of its recent work is shared through Instagram.
What sets it apart: a one-to-one setting where the cutter and the client work together without the bustle of a showroom. Pricing is quoted on request.

Best for: modern styling, wedding outfits and a complete look in one visit.
Area: Eight Thonglor, 88/1 Thonglor Road, near Thong Lo BTS.The house: Urbandude is a men's outfitter on the ground floor of Eight Thonglor, offering suits, shirts, shoes and wedding outfits alongside alterations.

Best for: soft-shouldered, half canvas jackets in a traditional workshop.
Area: 40/1 Soi Naphasap, Khlong Tan Nuea. The house: an old-school workshop with a focus on careful hand construction, popular with grooms and with clients building suits to last.
What sets it apart: half canvas jackets with unpadded shoulders and hand-rolled lapels, a softer silhouette than the structured Bangkok norm. Pricing is quoted on request.
What to ask: “Can you make a full canvas version, and how does the price change?”
Not every shop that calls itself bespoke works to the standard the word implies. These four signs tell you, quickly and politely, whether a Bangkok tailor is the real thing.
A properly drafted and fitted suit needs time between fittings for the cutter to rework the pattern. A 24-hour suit is, by necessity, built on a standard block. If the timeline sounds remarkable, the garment usually is not.
A serious tailor will raise canvas construction before you ask. Fused jackets can look sharp on the first wear, but the glued interlining can stiffen and bubble with heat, humidity and dry cleaning.
Ask for the mill, the weight in grams and the composition. A tailor who cannot name the mill behind a bolt of "Italian wool" is asking you to trust a label rather than a cloth.
One fitting leaves no room to correct the balance of the jacket, the pitch of the sleeve or the line of the trouser. Two fittings are the minimum for bespoke, and complex builds or wedding garments often need three.
The best bespoke tailors in Bangkok earn their reputations one fitting at a time, and each house here has done so in its own way. Perry brings five decades on Silom Road, Chano offers the privacy of a studio, Urbandude dresses the modern groom, and Primary House keeps soft tailoring alive. Match the house to the garment you need, and give it the time a real fitting deserves.
For a first commission that will carry a wardrobe for years, AMBFA Tailor remains our benchmark. Four generations on Sukhumvit Soi 19 have kept to one principle since the 1960s: a pattern cut for one person, refined until it is right, and kept on file for every order that follows. Clients abroad can meet the cutters at AMBFA's trunk shows in London, Dubai or Washington D.C. Read our full AMBFA review, or book an appointment with AMBFA directly.
